At its core, "on the cycle" is a fundamental strategy in hockey that involves controlling the puck along the boards in the offensive zone, creating scoring opportunities for your team. By maintaining possession of the puck, your team can force the opposition to defend, eventually creating gaps that can be exploited.

F2 is stationed atop the face-off circle and is attempting to find open space for a pass and shot.. F3 is standing just outside the crease on the near post. When the cycle moves, each player either rotates clockwise or counterclockwise, depending on which side of the ice the offense is.

When making a cycle pass, try and bank the puck off the boards so that it is easier for your teammate to handle the pass. It is very difficult to pick the puck up right off the boards, especially when moving and with a defender right on you. Remember, you are not just throwing the puck, but actually using the boards to helping you make a pass.
